Over 400 Early Childhood educators, administrators, business leaders and more gathered together Saturday, March 18 for the 2017 Orange County Early Childhood STEM Symposium held at the Anaheim Marriott. This year’s symposium provided 7 hours of professional development through various hands-on workshops, and a special keynote session featuring Astronaut Leland Melvin.

Chapman University’s annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest reached new heights this year with a record-breaking 250 middle and high schools registered to participate. Now in its 18th year, the contest involves some 7,000 students representing 30 states and eight countries. Each school sends forward to the final round of judging three entries on the theme “I Have a Story to Tell.” The awards ceremony honoring entries in prose, poetry, art, and film, was held in Chapman’s Memorial Hall on Friday, March 10, at 11 a.m. with over 1,000 students and teachers and 20 Holocaust survivors from Orange and Los Angeles Counties in attendance.

The growth of hockey in Orange County has been a priority for the Ducks organization has taken a step forward recently. On February 16, the Ducks, H&S Ventures, Irvine Ice Foundation and the City of Irvine officially broke ground on new public skating facility at the Orange County Great Park. The facility will open in June 2018, and at a staggering 280,000 square feet will be the largest in California and one of the largest in the U.S. It will include three NHL-standard ice rinks and one Olympic-sized, as well as a 2,500 seat arena.

Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science & the Public (the Society) announced the winners of the sixth annual national Broadcom MASTERS® competition for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Broadcom Foundation and the Society also announced first and second place winners in each of the STEM categories of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, the Team Award and two Rising Stars who will be the U.S. delegates at the Broadcom MASTERS International and official observers to Intel ISEF.

The Orange County Register shared the stories of several students participating in the Samueli Academy’s summer job program. Thanks to partnerships with 41 local businesses, all 115 incoming seniors were able to gain invaluable internship experience as part of this program.

The 6th annual Integrative Medicine for the Underserved (IM4US) conference will be held the Irvine Marriott this year with the pre-conference session beginning on August 18 and the conference closing on August 20. Integrative health professionals will have the opportunity to come together over workshops and to listen in with plenary speakers all in efforts to “Collaborate to Create Healthy Communities.”

On June 24, the “Live Healthy OC– Empowering a Community of Wellness” initiative was officially launched. The efforts aims to transform community health centers from a disease-focused health delivery model to one that focuses on prevention and health creation through the implementation of integrative health practices and stems back to a partnership formed in 2014 between the Health Funders Partnership of Orange County, the UC Irvine School of Medicine (HFPOC), the Samueli Foundation, the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine (SSCIM), and the Coalition of Orange County Community Health Centers (Coalition).

On May 19, the Orange County STEM Initiative (OC STEM) hosted an evening reception at Discovery Cube OC to both recognize the inaugural cohort of the OC STEM Ecosystem Insitute and welcome its second cohort of nine school district teams. The program is a professional learning institute designed to strengthen Orange County school district leadership through the development of STEM Learning Ecosystems and implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programs over an intensive 12-month time period.
